3. Plan Your Outfit Thoughtfully
UNC Student Stores: Your primary source for official grad regalia.
Facebook Marketplace/Groups: Explore “Free & For Sale” groups for opportunities to purchase gently-used gowns at reduced prices.
Be sure to wear something that’s comfortable and makes you feel confident beneath your gown. Ladies typically wear a dress and sandals and guys typically wear a button up shirt with tie, slacks and nice shoes and socks.
Color Options: White, cream, and soft neutrals beautifully complement Carolina Blue.
Contrast Matters: If you’re wearing a black gown for your Master’s or PhD, steer clear of a black outfit underneath—it can fade into the background in photos.
The Wrinkle Rule: Steam your gown as soon as it arrives! While I can retouch images, digitally removing wrinkles isn’t possible. If you need to iron, use low heat with a fabric barrier to prevent damage.
Gentlemen - We might catch a glimpse of your socks while seated. And don't forget about grooming your beard and nose hairs!
Ladies - If wearing nail polish, ensure it’s fresh and unchipped. Use hair spray to manage any flyaway hairs.
